According to Johnson County authorities, a 20-year-old man faces criminal charges, including attempted murder, in connection with a shooting that included his stepfather and his stepfather’s son.
The initial hearing for Joseph M. Davidson of Greenwood is scheduled for Monday afternoon in Johnson Superior Court 3 in Franklin. He remained in the Johnson County Jail on Wednesday night under a $100,000 cash bond, according to online court records.
The stepfather, Aaron Hawthorne, and his son were not hurt in the incident.
According to a redacted court document from Johnson County’s prosecutor, Hawthorne reported the gunshot to police on Sunday from a disabled vehicle in the 1600 block of Tuscany Drive. That’s in the Trails at Woodfield housing subdivision off South Honey Creek Road, about a mile east of the State Road 135/Olive Branch Road intersection.
The stepfather’s son was not named in the redacted court record, and his age was blacked out.
The incident occurred about the same time that police were dispatched to Davidson’s mother’s home, where a domestic quarrel had been reported. The location of the home was blurred out in the redacted court filing.
Investigators discovered five spent 45-caliber shells at the front door, as well as two bullet pieces at an adjacent property.
Lauren Hawthorne, Davidson’s mother, granted police permission to enter the home, where officers discovered him and later “secured” him from an upstairs bedroom, according to the court record.
Greenwood Police Department investigators believe Davidson had previously gotten into a physical altercation with his mother.
A witness informed a Greenwood police officer that Davidson and Lauren Hawthorne had a verbal disagreement that escalated into shoving. When Aaron Hawthorne attempted to intercede, he and Davidson engaged in a fight.
Police believe the shooting was the result of bickering and fighting after Aaron Hawthorn and his stepson left the house and drove a pickup west on Cherry Tree Lane. That’s in the Cherry Tree Walk home development, east of the intersection of South Honey Creek Road and Demaree Road. It’s about a two-minute drive southeast of Tuscany Drive, where the incident was initially reported to police.
Police discovered that the shooting had damaged both a truck and a neighbor’s home.
A news release issued by Johnson County Prosecutor Lance D. read: “Inside Davidson’s bedroom, law enforcement recovered several rounds of .45 caliber ammunition, a small handgun save, a .45 caliber magazine, a ten-round Glock magazine containing .45 ammunition, and a pink Glock switch which serves as a mechanical attachment utilized to convert a weapon into a fully automatic machine gun.”
In addition to attempted murder, Davidson was charged with felony criminal recklessness, two felony counts of intimidation, felony possession of a machine gun, two felony counts of domestic battery, and two misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief with damage ranging from $750 to $50,000, according to online court records. The accusations were filed on Tuesday in Johnson County Court.
