FLORENCE. S.C. — A judge threw out the trial of a guy from Florence who was accused of killing his girlfriend on Friday afternoon.

Derrick Lamont Brunson, 49, was being tried at the Florence County Judicial Center when the judge called a mistrial.

According to Florence County Sheriff’s Major Michael M. Nunn, Brunson is accused of beating 31-year-old Katlyn Shippnick all over her body over some time, causing internal bleeding that led to her death on or around May 21, 2021.

Police said they thought her death was strange at first before figuring out she had been beaten to death.

The jury started to talk at 11:11 on Friday morning. With nine guilty votes and three not guilty votes, the jury could not decide what to do. After that, the judge called a mistrial.
