FRANKFORT, Ky. — Secretary of State Michael Adams said that a lot more people in Kentucky have signed up to vote since the last election, which was only a few months ago.
Adams said that 14,502 people signed up to vote in July.
“A lot of people in Kentucky are signing up to vote because they believe our elections are fair,” Adams said in a news release.
The voter list was also cleaned up. 5,675 people were taken off because they had died, been convicted of a crime, registered more than once, or other reasons. There are 8,827 more votes than there were before.
Adam said that the likely reason for the rise is the presidential election. However, he said that the drop in new Democratic registrations could mean that people aren’t excited about the new presidential candidate.
Republicans, who make up 46% of the audience, saw the most registrations—6,221 people signed up as Republicans, which is a 0.38% rise for Kentucky’s largest party, which has 1,628,029 voters.
Only 370,513 voters in Kentucky are registered as Independent or with another party. This is the smallest group of voters in Kentucky, making up only 11% of the population. But the number of people registered as “other” votes rose by 3,784, which is a 1.03 percent rise.
Democratic voters in Kentucky are still a big part of the registered voting population, but the number of them is going down. Of the votes, 1,506,394 are Democrats, which is 43%. Adams said that the number of Democrats registered dropped by 579 people in July, which is a 0.04% drop.
