Kohl’s Announces Closure of 27 Stores, 3 Locations in Southern California Impacted
CNS –
Kohl’s, a major player in the retail industry, has announced the closure of 27 of its stores nationwide, impacting several regions across the United States. The closures, which are part of the company’s broader strategy to streamline its operations and focus on its most profitable locations, will include three stores in Southern California. This marks a significant change for the region, where Kohl’s has been a staple in many communities.
Details
The company has not disclosed the exact dates for the closures, but they are expected to take place over the next few months. The specific Southern California locations affected by the closures have been identified as stores in Riverside, Santa Ana, and Torrance. These closures are part of a larger move to consolidate Kohl’s footprint and focus on locations that are performing at higher levels of profitability.
Kohl’s has stated that it will work to ensure that impacted employees have opportunities for transfers to nearby stores, but some positions may be eliminated as a result of the closures. The company has also mentioned that the affected stores will be holding clearance events in the coming weeks, offering discounts to customers as they prepare for the final closing dates.
Strategy Behind the Closures
Kohl’s has faced increasing competition from online retailers and other brick-and-mortar chains in recent years, prompting the company to reassess its store portfolio. As part of its efforts to adapt to changing shopping habits and a challenging retail environment, Kohl’s is prioritizing more profitable locations while reducing its presence in areas where foot traffic and sales have slowed.
This closure strategy aligns with the broader trend of many major retailers scaling back their physical store presence to focus more on e-commerce and omnichannel sales. In addition to the store closures, Kohl’s has been focusing on enhancing its digital offerings, including expanding its online store and partnering with platforms like Amazon for returns and exchanges.

According to department store Kohl’s, three stores in Southern California are among 27 that will be closed by April due to underperformance. The company will also be closing a fulfillment center.
One location in Los Angeles County and two in San Diego County are set to close:
The addresses are 5505 Balboa Ave. in San Diego, 134 N. El Camino Real in Encinitas, and 8739 S. Sepulveda Blvd. in Westchester.
Out of all 50 states, 10 stores have closed in California. The following California locations are also closing:
The following addresses are situated in the cities: Fremont (43782 Christy St.), Mountain View (350 Showers Dr.), Napa (1116 1st St.), Pleasanton (4525 Rosewood Dr.), Point West (Sacramento) (1896 Arden Way), San Rafael (5010 Northgate Dr.), and San Luis Obispo (205 Madonna Rd.).
San Bernardino, California is home to the fulfillment center that will soon be shutting down.
The store in Wisconsin claimed to “believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base” despite the fact that “these specific locations were underperforming stores.”

“We always take these decisions very seriously,” stated Tom Kingsbury, chief executive officer of Kohla. “As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”
Along with the stores in California, Kohl’s is planning to shutter a single location in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Utah. Ohio, Virginia, and Illinois will each see two closings. Take a look at the list of places here.
There are around 1,150 Kohl’s stores across the country. Closed stores account for slightly more than 2% of their total.
Impact on Southern California Communities
For residents in Southern California, the closure of these three Kohl’s stores may come as a disappointment. The affected locations have long been popular shopping destinations, serving both local customers and tourists who frequent the area. As many shoppers in the region have come to rely on Kohl’s for its wide variety of affordable clothing, home goods, and seasonal items, the closures will leave a gap in some neighborhoods.
While the closure of these stores is a blow to local economies, especially in the areas where they have been anchors in shopping centers, Kohl’s has emphasized that it will continue to serve its customers through its online platform. The company is also expected to expand its partnerships with other retailers and platforms to ensure that its products remain accessible to Southern California shoppers.
Looking Ahead
Kohl’s has indicated that its overall business model is evolving, and the closure of underperforming stores is part of a larger effort to strengthen its financial position and better align with consumer preferences. The company remains committed to its omnichannel approach, which includes a robust e-commerce platform and a network of strategically located stores that support its long-term growth objectives.
As Kohl’s navigates this period of transition, shoppers in Southern California and other affected regions will have to adjust to the closure of familiar stores. However, Kohl’s has stated that it will continue to serve its loyal customers through its other locations and digital channels, ensuring that shoppers have access to its products and services.
The retail landscape continues to evolve, and Kohl’s efforts to adapt to changing consumer behaviors will likely play a significant role in shaping the future of the brand in both physical and online retail spaces.
