Man Accused of Killing Oregon Nurse Showed ‘Deliberate Cruelty’ in Her Final Moments: Prosecutors
According to court records filed this week, a man accused of murdering an Oregon nurse in September was “deliberately cruel” to her in her dying moments.
KOIN reported that prosecutors in Melissa Jubane’s murder case stated in court files this week that suspect Bryce Schubert, 27, is viewed as a threat to public safety and that “future efforts to rehabilitate” him “will not be successful.”
The prosecutors reportedly stated in the files that “the degree of harm or loss attributed to the current crime of conviction was significantly greater than typical for such an offense,” according to the outlet.
Schubert resided in the same apartment complex as Jubane, 32, when she died, according to local KHON. According to the outlet, Jubane had just come home from Hawaii, where she married her boyfriend of ten years the week before her abduction.
Jubane’s coworkers at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center reported her missing when she failed to show up for her shift on September 4.
According to KATU, Schubert has been charged with second-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, and first-degree mistreatment of a corpse, however, details concerning the kidnapping and murder have not been disclosed.
According to the publication, Schubert worked as a nurse at Providence Portland Medical Center from 2022 to 2023, but not at the same hospital as Jubane. KOIN, KHON, and KATU say it’s unknown how Schubert and Jubane met.
“She is very humble, very pretty, she’s smart, very intelligent, and very respectful,” Jubane’s mother-in-law told KHON last month. “She’s like a daughter to me, she’s very close to me.”
Jubane’s mother-in-law told the source that her son met his wife while on vacation in Hawaii ten years ago, and that she returned to see him regularly after that. According to KOIN, Jubane’s husband is an active member of the United States Navy who reported for service in Washington while his wife returned to Oregon after their marriage in late August.
A GoFundMe page set up to help Jubane’s family has raised almost $94,000.
“Melissa was not only a loving wife, daughter, sister, friend, and community member, but also a dedicated nurse who cared deeply for her patients and work-family,” the donation notice stated. “She touched countless lives with her kindness, compassion, and selflessness.”
