Marjorie Taylor Greene Posts Upside Down Flag in ‘Stop the Steal’ Protest Moments After Trump’s Conviction
After former President Donald Trump was found guilty on Thursday, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene shared a picture of a flag that was facing the wrong way.
Supporters of the former president waved an upside-down flag at the US Capitol on January 6 as a sign of the “Stop the Steal” effort. Also, the same symbol was seen at the home of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito in Virginia three years ago and was recently brought to the public’s attention, which caused a stir and led to calls for his retirement.
After a six-week criminal trial in New York, the 45th President of the United States was found guilty of all 34 felony counts of falsifying company records. This was just before Ms. Greene posted the picture on X.
The decision was given by the jury of 12 New Yorkers after they thought about it for two days.
A payment of $130,000 to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election was hidden by the latter.
Greene, a Republican representative and longtime Trump backer, wrote on X: “Joe Biden’s campaign orchestrated a rally outside of the courthouse in New York City supporting a potential conviction of President Trump.
“We all knew this case was rigged from the start.” This isn’t a trial; it’s an attack. We need to stop giving weapons to the American government. This is how things work in third-world countries!”
Around the time the decision was read, protesters could be seen outside the courthouse. In a statement made to Truth Social on Thursday, Trump agreed with what Greene said.
“THIS WAS A DISGRACE—AN IMPOSSIBLE TRIAL BY A BORED JUDGE,” he wrote. “WE WILL FIGHT FOR OUR CONSTITUTION—THIS IS NOT OVER YET!”
After that, he said, “VICTORY ON NOVEMBER 5TH. SAVE AMERICA!!!”
The sentencing for Trump is set for four days before the Republican National Convention. He is likely to be the Republican nominee for president.
During the trial, a lot of Republicans went to New York City to show their support for the former president who has been impeached twice and charged four times. Anyone who was there, from presidents and attorney generals to back-bench House of Representatives members, was there.
Many Republicans did this to get around the order that Judge Juan Merchan put on Mr. Trump to keep quiet.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, who went to court earlier this month to back Trump, also spoke out against the verdict on Thursday.
“This is a bad day in American history,” he said. “Democrats cheered as they found the leader of the other party guilty of ridiculous charges based on the testimony of a lawyer who had been disbarred and convicted of a crime.” This wasn’t a law matter; it was just a political one.
Representative Matt Gaetz, a far-right Republican from Florida who also went to New York to support him, said the decision was unfair without any evidence.
It was a bad trial with a bad judge and a bad DA, so this decision was also bad, he said. “To save the country, we will stand with President Trump more than ever.”
On X, Mr. Gaetz also put up a link to Trump’s campaign.
Rep. Lauren Boebert, Mr. Gaetz, and other extreme Republicans who went to the trial in New York earlier this month to show their support, didn’t agree with the ruling.
“If this were happening in another country, Biden would be asking Congress to authorize a war to restore democracy abroad,” Ms. Boebert said on X. This year, she has a tough primary in Colorado because she switched districts and is running against a Democrat. “This is Communism, do not get it wrong.”
Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, who was also in New York, said the trial was a “witch hunt.”
“This trial was a joke and a huge waste of taxpayer money,” he said. “Whether you look at the biased jury, the gag order that only applied to President Trump, the prosecution’s failure to describe the alleged crimes, or the fact that a unanimous verdict was not required for conviction, this trial was a complete joke and a huge waste of taxpayer dollars.”
The Texas House of Representatives removed Ken Paxton as attorney general, but the state senate did not convict him. Paxton then promised to help the former president.
He said, “As Attorney General of Texas, I will use every tool I have to fight this obvious corruption and political persecution coming from New York and the Biden administration.”
Kari Lake, a Republican running for senate in Arizona, spoke out against the decision, saying that the case was politically driven.
In a statement, she said, “We just saw the worst case of election interference and a complete sham of the rule of law in the 246-year history of our Republic.”
Representative Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina who had criticized Trump before she backed him, said that the decision was an example of the government using violence.
She said, “This is a VERY dark day for American democracy when the law is used against its own people.”
It was Senator Josh Hawley’s idea to change the results of the 2020 election. He pointed the finger at President Joe Biden and said he tried to make his biggest political opponent a criminal.
“Good job, Joe Biden.” “You’re the worst president ever,” he told her.
