Grand Rapids, MI – In a tragic incident that has shocked the community, Josiah Tyree Pittman, 19, was sentenced to 27 to 52 years in prison for the second-degree murder and felony firearms charges in the death of 15-year-old La’Kyijah Williams. The fatal shooting occurred while La’Kyijah was out riding a scooter with friends, celebrating a birthday in downtown Grand Rapids.

La’Kyijah’s family and the local community are grappling with the loss of a young life taken too soon, as authorities and court officials detail the events surrounding this devastating act of violence.

The Fateful Night in Grand Rapids

On the night of May 18, 2024, just before midnight, Josiah Pittman opened fire on a group of teenagers, including La’Kyijah, who were enjoying a birthday celebration. Surveillance video captured the moment Pittman pulled out a gun and shot into the group, striking La’Kyijah in the head, killing her instantly.

  • Pittman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony firearm charges in August.
  • The victim was a high school freshman with a “joyful spirit” who loved playing basketball.
  • There was no warning or exchange of words between the shooter and the teens prior to the shooting.

Legal Proceedings and Courtroom Reactions

Senior Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Blair Lachman condemned Pittman’s claim that he acted out of fear, stating:

“There was no exchange. There’s no exchange of words… This doesn’t show remorse. This is an excuse unsupported by any piece of evidence; it raises serious concerns that he may do the same thing if released.”

Despite this, Pittman expressed remorse during sentencing, apologizing to La’Kyijah’s family and acknowledging the irreversible harm he caused.

“Even though La’Kyijah was not my intended target, I was wrong, nonetheless, for letting the devil take control of my actions on that horrible day… I hope that La’Kyijah’s family and friends can find it in their heart to forgive what I’ve done.”

The Lasting Impact on La’Kyijah’s Family and Community

The loss has profoundly affected La’Kyijah’s loved ones. Her mother, Shaqueta Matheson, shared the emotional toll demanding ongoing health and emotional support:

“I’ve struggled with fear, anxiety, and overwhelming stress. This tragedy has affected every part of my life. I’ve been unable to work and have developed health issues from this trauma.”

This incident highlights the urgent need for safer community spaces and underscores the devastating consequences of gun violence on innocent lives.
