New Laws Take Effect in Mississippi on July 1, 2024
Jackson, Mississippi. Several new laws went into force in Mississippi on Monday.
The David R. Huggins Act will establish a pay scale for Mississippi Highway Patrol and Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics employees based on their rank.

Walker’s Law, named after a Starkville teenager who committed suicide, will also go into force.
This law criminalizes sextortion and severe sexual extortion.
It goes on to say that a person convicted of sexual extortion will be imprisoned.
- A maximum of five (5) years for a first offense.
- A maximum of ten (10) years for a second offense.
- The sentence cannot exceed fifteen (15) years for a third or subsequent offense.
A law governing squatting automobiles will also go into force.
House Bill 0349 prohibits automobiles with front fenders that are four or more inches taller than the rear fenders.

The governor signed more than 300 laws during the recent legislative session.
This includes:
- House Bill 0903 criminalizes the possession of machine gun conversion kits.
- Senate Bill 2339 permits high school students to learn sign language as a foreign language.
- The “SAFER Act” compels public school buildings to have separate male and female toilets and changing areas, as well as fraternities and sororities to do the same with housing.
