New Video Released in Deadly Deputy-Involved Shooting at Orlando-Area 7-Eleven
ORLANDO, Fla. – Newly released body camera footage shows the moments before a cop shot and killed someone inside a 7-Eleven on West Oak Ridge Road last month.
A deputy from the Orange County sheriff’s office is seen on tape shooting Tristan Mayberry, 19, in the candy aisle of the store. According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were watching a nearby home when they saw Mayberry, who they thought was a member of a gang, leaving the home.
Deputies followed Mayberry to the 7-Eleven, where they tried to talk to him but quickly got out of hand.
In the video, a deputy walks into the shop and walks up to Mayberry and her friend, who are facing the deputy.
“Hey, boss! The deputy asks, “You know, only one of you guys can be riding a scooter, right?”
Mayberry turns around and says, “No, sir.” He is seen holding a phone in his right hand and a bottle of water in his left. “I had no idea about that.”
After that, Mayberry turns around and walks down an aisle away from the officer.
“Man, come here!” The officer tells Mayberry, “Come here, dude!” and asks him to show his ID.
The officer chases Mayberry down the aisle and around the left corner. He then points his gun at the teen and tells him to stop.
“Hey!” Stop! “Stop!” the deputy yells, but Mayberry keeps going. A second deputy comes up behind him in the next aisle.
With his gun drawn, the second officer tells Mayberry to put up his hands. The teen then turns around and walks toward the first deputy, who fires two shots at Mayberry.
Mayberry can be heard yelling and falling to the ground.
The second officer puts his gun away and kneels over Mayberry, but they start to fight. You can hear the second officer yelling at Mayberry over and over, “Don’t grab!”
Deputies say Mayberry didn’t listen to their orders and instead tried to reach for a 9mm handgun in his pocket that had an extended magazine. The second cop was trying to get that gun while the fight was going on, according to the sheriff’s office. The first deputy then shot Mayberry six more times.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is looking into the event.
