New York Hit by Unexpected Earthquake on January 1st
The start of 2025 is bringing more earthquakes.
The end of 2024 was full of quakes across the United States. We had a 7.0 magnitude quake in Northern California at the start of December.
Later in the month, earthquakes impacted Alaska, Ohio, much of the Midwest and the South. There were dozens of earthquakes across the United States in the final month of the year.
Now, on New Year’s Day, an earthquake shook parts of New York.
Earlier this year, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit New York and New Jersey.
On New Year’s Day, a minor quake hit parts of New York, though this one was more in upstate.
From the report:
It had a magnitude of 2.4, which is considered minor.
The USGS says damage generally doesn’t occur until an earthquake’s magnitude reaches somewhere above 4 or 5.
Multiple people in the area reported feeling the shaking.
Those reports sent to the USGS indicate those close to the St. Lawrence / Franklin County border could have felt the shaking including the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation, Helena, and the Town of Bombay.
The earthquake that hit Northern New York was considered minor on Wednesday morning. However, it was big enough that multiple people in the area were able to feel it.
