In 2024, Newark Liberty International Airport was included in the Transportation Security Administration’s yearly list of the most bizarre findings at checkpoints when a passenger attempted to conceal a disassembled gun inside a Lego toy box.
The federal agency reported that in October, a man from Mississippi was apprehended by TSA agents at the Terminal A security checkpoint after they found 9mm pistol parts carefully hidden within the traveler’s carry-on.
A pot in a peanut butter jar was allegedly attempted to be transferred.

According to the TSA, the gun’s components—including the frame, slide, spring, and magazine—were found among the LEGO pieces of a Black Panther set, with a sock stuffed behind it. The magazine had twelve rounds.
The airport in New Jersey was ranked eighth on the agency’s list of the ten most unexpected finds at checkpoints last year due to the strange sighting.
Regarding the incident that occurred on October 16, Thomas Carter, the federal security director for New Jersey at TSA, stated, “This is an example of someone who was intentionally attempting to carry a gun onto a flight.”.
He initially claimed it was a toy gun, but then he changed his tale and said his brother had it. It was a completely disassembled gun that he could have put together and taken on an airplane; that much is certain, regardless of his assertions.
Unidentified man was apprehended and the gun seized by Port Authority Police; he was en route to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, according to the TSA.
The government agency made light of the event in a three-minute YouTube movie that was posted at the end of the year. The video also featured other cases of passengers trying to pull over TSA officers nationwide.
