Nine People Were Hurt in an Escalator Fire at New York City’s JFK Airport, and Hundreds Were Forced to Leave the Building

Authorities say that at least nine people were slightly hurt when an escalator at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport caught fire early Wednesday morning.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said in a statement that more than 900 tourists were taken out of Terminal 8 around 7 a.m. ET because people said there was a lot of smoke in the area. It looked like the source was in Concourse C.

They said there was a fire on the staircase in New York City. It said that at least nine people got minor injuries.

Based on what the port authority said, four of them were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

On X, the airport said that operations had started up again and told travelers to check with their airlines for the latest details.
