Northern Indiana Bypass Shutdown: Snowstorm Causes 12-Car Collision

SOUTH BEND, INDIANA – In a Facebook post, St. Joseph County Sheriff William Redman asked motorists to stay off the closed U.S. 20 bypass after a massive pileup on the snow-covered highway in northern Indiana.
The enormous pileup involved 12 automobiles, including three commercial vehicles, according to the St. Joseph County Police Department when the roadway reopened just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday. There were two reported minor injuries.
According to the agency, during a snowstorm that moved across the area on Tuesday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., its staff responded to over 33 collisions.

The Indiana Department of Transportation reported that U.S. 20 eastbound was closed at the 74.5-mile marker just outside South Bend as of 2:30 p.m.
The cities of South Bend and Mishawaka are located in St. Joseph County.
The St. Joseph County Police Department posted pictures on Facebook that showed several cars and semi-trailers off the road. On the post, Sheriff William Redman wrote, “Light visibility is terrible out here! Avoid using the bypass!

“As our team continues to respond to the bypass, it is an all-hands-on-deck situation,” the police department post continued. Roads are slippery, and visibility is still poor.
Right now, only minor injuries are being recorded. To escape being struck by a semi, one of our officers had to pull off the road. Thankfully, they are okay. Bypass remains closed from SR 2 eastbound up to Mayflower Road.”
