Officer Injured, Suspects Flee Scene as Chicago Police Shooting Unfolds on Near North Side

A person of interest has been arrested, and one Chicago police officer has been sent to the hospital for observation following a traffic stop that resulted in a shooting on the Near North Side. The incident occurred at 6:50 p.m. on Sunday in the 300 block of West Division Street.

According to Chicago police, officers initially attempted a traffic stop on a car after getting a call about a person armed with a gun.

According to CPD, during the stop, the car’s occupants ignored verbal directions from police and fled the area, hitting one police vehicle.

As the suspects escaped, one cop shot at their vehicle, according to authorities. The automobile was found a short while later in the 100 block of W. North Avenue.

A person of interest has been detained, according to CPD.

One cop was also transported to a nearby hospital for observation, but no more injuries were recorded.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is looking into the “comprehensive use of force” and the details of the incident. The Chicago Police Department claimed it is fully cooperating.

As per department protocol, the officer(s) concerned will be assigned administrative tasks for at least 30 days.
