The incident, which has drawn attention to issues of animal welfare and neglect, involved the rescue of a staggering number of creatures living in hazardous conditions.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office, responding to a welfare check on December 21, uncovered the disturbing situation. At the heart of this case is 48-year-old Lisa Lacharite, who has been charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty and neglect. Upon arrival at the property, deputies were confronted with an overpowering ammonia odor and a scene of overwhelming neglect.
Inside Lacharite’s mobile home, authorities found 164 birds, 142 cats, and three dogs. The environment they inhabited was deemed dangerously unhealthy, with ammonia levels reportedly ranging between 70 and 100 parts per million (ppm), far exceeding the 50 ppm threshold considered hazardous for both humans and animals.
The severity of the situation was further highlighted by the condition of the animals and the home’s environment. Many of the animals appeared malnourished and sick, and the house was in a state of extreme disrepair. Lacharite, who claimed to be rescuing the animals, admitted to authorities that she was overwhelmed by their number and could no longer manage their care.
