Over 35% More People Have Signed Up to Vote in Virginia, and Vp Harris is Now Leading the Democratic Ticket
RICHMOND, Va. – Eight News got information that the number of people registered to vote in Virginia is going up. This is because Vice President Kamala Harris announced her plans to run for president as a Democrat after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race.
“Democrats are especially happy that the party has a new face and a new candidate who doesn’t have the age baggage that Joe Biden did,” Rich Meagher, a political analyst for 8News, said.
Wednesday and Thursday (7/22 and 7/23) were the first full days of Harris’s campaign. According to the Virginia Department of Elections, 4,899 Virginians signed up to vote, which is 38.5% more than the same time last week.
Meagher said, “These could be Democrats who are excited about Kamala Harris’s campaign and want to vote for her.” It could also be the Republicans that Kamala Harris won over and what’s going on in the Democratic Party.
Meagher says that Democrats have reason to be hopeful, even though we don’t know much about the people who just registered to vote. This is because the party seems excited about President Biden’s choice to step down.
“New registrations show that either people who felt left out of the process are now excited to vote for or against Harris, or younger voters who don’t see a reason to get involved because Joe Biden is running are now excited because there is a new person in the race,” Meagher said.
Not only in Virginia are more people signing up to vote now that President Biden has chosen to step down. Vote.org, a non-profit that works to get more people to vote, says the number of people signing up to vote across the country has gone up by 700%.
