Pennsylvania Girl, 11, Stabbed While Shielding Mother From Violent Attack by Estranged Father

Redstone Township, Pennsylvania – An 11-year-old girl is being hailed as a hero after she was stabbed while protecting her mother from her estranged father during a violent rampage inside the family’s home on Sunday, according to prosecutors and local reports.

Father Ignored Protection Order and Forced Entry

Authorities said Richard Cody Hall, 33, broke into the home of his estranged wife and her two children, despite being under a protection-from-abuse (PFA) order.

Neighbors told investigators they heard a car speeding down the street followed by the sound of a door being kicked in. Fayette County District Attorney Mike Aubele said Hall smashed a window to force his way inside.

“He physically broke a window door to get into the house and began attacking her with a knife,” Aubele told reporters.

Daughter Threw Herself on Mother During Attack

During the assault, the couple’s 11-year-old daughter jumped on her mother to shield her from Hall’s knife. Both were stabbed in the struggle, but prosecutors said the child’s actions saved her mother’s life.

“That 11-year-old child saved her mother’s life,” Aubele emphasized. “We can’t say enough about her bravery.”

Hall also allegedly attacked his estranged wife’s parents, who were inside the home at the time, before turning the knife on himself.

Multiple Victims Hospitalized

In total, four people were stabbed during the rampage — Hall’s estranged wife, their daughter, and her parents. All were taken to area hospitals with serious but stable injuries, according to Law and Crime News.

Hall himself sustained a self-inflicted stab wound and was hospitalized under guard. Prosecutors said he will be arraigned once he is released from medical care.

History of Violence Alleged

This was not the first time the young girl had intervened to protect her mother from her father, according to prosecutors.

“She [the mother] recently moved back in with her parents and took their 11- and 8-year-old children with her,” Aubele said. “Unfortunately, Hall showed up at the house and carried out this attack.”

Court documents confirm Hall faces four counts of attempted homicide and four counts of aggravated assault, along with additional related charges.

Community Shaken but Grateful for Outcome

The Fayette County District Attorney’s Office said they are “extremely grateful this wasn’t worse”, crediting the quick actions of the child and the response from emergency personnel.

Neighbors described hearing “screams moments after the break-in,” underscoring how sudden and violent the incident was.

“This is every family’s nightmare,” one Redstone Township resident said. “It’s terrifying, but that little girl is a hero.”

Domestic Violence Awareness

The case has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of protection-from-abuse orders and better resources for families escaping domestic violence.

Advocates note that in many domestic violence cases, children often step into dangerous situations to defend a parent, sometimes with tragic consequences.

“This young girl’s courage is remarkable,” one advocate said, “but no child should ever be placed in that position.”
