Plane Crash Near Wright Brothers Memorial in North Carolina Claims 5 Lives, Including a Minor
Five individuals were murdered when the single-engine plane they were aboard crashed in North Carolina while attempting to land, according to officials.
A Cirrus SR22 plane crashed near the Wright Brothers National Memorial’s First Flight Airport on Saturday around 5:55 p.m. local time, according to an email from the National Transportation Safety Board to USA Today. The airport is located near Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, approximately 90 miles south of Virginia Beach.
According to the National Park Service, the jet caught fire and crashed in a wooded section of the airport.
Mike Barber, a National Parks Service official, told USA TODAY that four adults and one youngster were aboard. The Federal Aviation Administration first reported that there were four passengers on board.
Barber reported that there were no survivors. The victims’ identities have not been published.
The National Park Service reported that witnesses witnessed the plane attempting to land before it crashed.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are looking into the event.
When does the First Flight Airport reopen?
The park and airport will reopen at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
According to CBS 17, the airport was closed Saturday night following the incident.
According to the National Park Service, both the airport and the park were closed on Sunday and will remain so on Monday as a result of the disaster.
