Sailboat Sinks, Two Injured in Hingham Boat Collision
HINGHAM – Two people were badly hurt in a dramatic boat crash in Hingham Bay, Hingham, and were rushed to the hospital.
Sailboat sank in an accident
According to the police, a speedboat hit a sailboat and sunk it. Two people were hurt in the crash.
Bill Norton has been boating his whole life and was shocked by the crash. From his house across the bay, he could see the sailboat’s mast sticking up, which made him feel scared.
“I hoped no one got hurt.” Norton said, “A boat can be fixed, but people getting hurt. That’s a different story.” “Sailboat has the right of way over a powerboat, every time.”
“This does not happen often.”
Captain Ray Suarez of the Water Taxi saw what happened because he was taking people back and forth all day. He has spent most of his life on the water and thought the site was strange.
“We could just make out the mast above the water.” “A lot of state police and salvage boats were trying to figure out what to do with it,” Captain Suarez said. “Most sailboats move very slowly, while most powerboats move very quickly.” Someone must not have been paying attention because they hit the boat so hard that it sank, which doesn’t happen very often.
The Massachusetts Environmental Police, first rescuers from Hingham and Weymouth, and other people quickly came to help after the boat crash. A towboat will be used to get the sunken sailboat out of the water so it doesn’t hurt other boats in the bay, according to first responders.
“Make sure you have life preservers for everyone on board, you go at a safe pace, so you stay safe and you keep the people around you safe as well,” said Suarez.
The event is being looked into by the Massachusetts Environmental Police.
