Scammers Target Los Angeles Wildfire Victims, Authorities Issue Warning
CNS –
The authorities in Los Angeles County are warning the public about a new danger: frauds linked to the ongoing wildfires.
Authorities have issued many warnings about criminals planning to take advantage of the generosity of those who are trying to help those affected by the fires.
During a press conference on Saturday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta acknowledged the generosity of individuals who wish to assist, donate, and provide support to the victims. “Some people are taking advantage of people’s kindness and generosity by scamming and defrauding them,” the author writes.
Bonta warned people to be wary of groups that pose as charities or nonprofits to take advantage of those in need after a fire.

Bonta added that scammers have preyed on the elderly, immigrants, and others who do not speak English as their first language.
Added to that, there are instances where fake organizations use names that give the impression of being authentic.
Donors can protect themselves from these scams by researching the charities they are contemplating giving to before donating, according to regulators.
Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau are two resources that Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell recommended for checking groups.
So that people may be sure their money is going to the right places, GoFundMe is checking the legitimacy of its fundraisers. World Central Kitchen, Pasadena Humane, Baby2Baby, and a host of others are among the groups they’re recommending to the public as places to make charitable contributions.

Spend some time learning as much as you can about the nonprofit you’re thinking about donating to. On Sunday, McDonnell told a press briefing that credible organizations will have transparent goals and histories.

“Opting instead for secure, traceable payment methods to ensure that your contributions reach those in need.” McDonnell added that people should avoid donating cash if at all feasible.
Along those lines, McDonnell urged anyone with reason to believe a donation request is fake to report it to the authorities.
Law enforcement officials are “eager to prosecute” anyone discovered preying on people’s kindness, according to Robert G. Luna, the Los Angeles County Sheriff.
On Sunday, Bonta emphasized the severity of the penalties by restating this warning.
“To those who would exploit this tragedy for their selfish benefit, who would prey on those who have already suffered tremendous losses, and who would see only financial gain in this catastrophic event, I have a message for you: You will be held accountable,” Bonta declared. “I will ensure that you are held responsible by involving my office.”
