Shooting Near the University of Cincinnati Kills 3 and Hurts 2
Three people were killed and two were hurt in a shooting near the University of Cincinnati campus early Monday morning.
Fox News, WCPO-TV, and USA Today all say that at 2:50 a.m., Cincinnati Police Department officers were walking around the area of Highland and East University streets when they heard several gunshots.
The students were told about what happened a few minutes later.
“UC Emergency: Police are responding to a report of an emergency at Highland/E University.” If it’s safe, stay where you are. “Be alert and act as needed,” says a post on X from the university’s public safety department at 2:54 AM.
It wasn’t long before the department confirmed on X that police were on the scene and told people to stay inside because “more info” would be available soon.
The news sources said that when police arrived, they found four male victims. One of them was declared dead at the scene. The other three people were taken to nearby hospitals, where two of them were declared dead. The news sources said that a fifth victim showed up at the hospital later.
Police say they saw someone run into a house with a gun and later took that person to arrest. The incident is still being looked into. It’s still not clear if that person shot the person. PEOPLE has asked the Cincinnati Police Department for a quote.
The University of Cincinnati’s public safety department wrote on X about an hour after the first warning went out, “UC Emergency: ALL CLEAR Officers responded to Highland/E University for a shooting.” The suspect has been arrested, and cops will remain heavily present.
In an interview with WCPO-TV, Ronald Caulton, who lives in the area, said he remembered hearing shots fired.
“I was lying in bed when I heard four blasts that sounded like shotguns,” I said that someone was celebrating the Fourth of July very early, and then there were maybe eight or nine more shots, right? ‘Good gods!’ I thought. “I say that’s not fireworks,” Caulton said.
“I say that’s gunshots, you know, and so then my daughter, she was already in there calling 911,” he told us.
