Blount County Sheriff James Berrong confirmed the tragic events, shedding light on the details of the encounter that led to the devastating outcome.
The fallen deputy, identified as Greg McCowan, met his untimely demise during the traffic stop in Maryville on Thursday night. Alongside him, a female deputy found herself wounded, suffering a gunshot to the leg, and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, as revealed during an early Friday morning news conference held by the sheriff’s office.
Authorities swiftly launched a manhunt for the suspect, identified as Kenneth Wayne DeHart, 42, following the deadly altercation. Warrants were swiftly issued for DeHart’s arrest on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and felon in possession of a firearm.
