Texas Democrat’s Bold Move Derails Impeachment Vote, Jeffries Supports!
CNS News–House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has articulated a defense for the Democrats’ tactical move that led to the unsuccessful GOP bid to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his handling of the southern border migrant crisis.
The unexpected presence of Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), who appeared in a wheelchair, was a pivotal factor that thwarted the GOP’s narrow majority advantage, especially in the absence of Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) due to medical reasons.
Jeffries emphasized that the responsibility of floor management resides with the Republican leaders, dismissing allegations of deceptive tactics by Democrats regarding member attendance. This incident has sparked considerable debate, with some Republicans accusing Democrats of deliberately concealing Green’s participation to disrupt the vote tally.

Despite these accusations, Jeffries maintains a “functional relationship” with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) but remains firm on the boundaries of their cooperation, especially in the face of what he perceives as political gamesmanship by the GOP. Jeffries also highlighted that Green’s decision to vote was entirely voluntary, aiming to oppose what he and others view as a baseless impeachment effort led by figures such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) against Secretary Mayorkas.
