LAKE CHARLES, LA. — Legend Jack, a 4-year-old boy who was found dead behind the Louisiana Welcome Center in Vinton, has set up a fundraiser to help pay for his funeral.

Dad’s side of the family, Dion Polk, said they had been taking care of the boy for a few months. She also said he was smart and fun, and that he loved Sonic, Ninja Turtles, and Happy Meals.

Police in Calcasieu Parish said on July 8 that a child’s body was found in the water at the welcome center. Sheriff Guillory says that around 3 p.m., his officers were called because someone saw the body in the water.

As the case went on, detectives were able to figure out that the child was Legend Jack, who was 4 years old. The last time police saw the child was on Saturday with his mother, Aaliyah Jack, 25, of Lake Charles, and their 1-year-old brother.

In the continuing search for the 1-year-old child, around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, officers were sent to a call about a person seeing a baby in a ditch on I-10 East near Mile Marker 10. When the police got there, they were sure that the child was the missing 1-year-old.

“Our detectives are currently looking into this tragic event,” Sheriff Stitch Guillory said. “Thank goodness we were able to find the baby, who was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out.” He is safe now and in the care of the police. We know what the community is worried about and are determined to get justice for the kids concerned. Detectives from the CPSO are working hard to find out everything they can about this case and the death of the 4-year-old. We will use all of our tools to make sure that the investigation is complete. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of these two children.

People in Texas are calling the truck driver a hero because he saved the baby he saw moving near I-10 in Calcasieu Parish.

“As I was driving down the highway, I saw something to the right over a cliff. I thought it might have been a doll that someone had thrown out the window,” Reginald Walton, a driver for DHL Supply Chain, said. “But I saw it move as I walked by and thought, ‘That looks like a baby.'”

He told News15 that he slowed down, stopped, and called 911.

That’s why I got out of my car and walked back down to where I thought I saw the child. Sure enough, a boy was sitting there. I saw him smile at me, and then he got up, started crying, and walked toward me. As he got closer, I grabbed his hand, and he stopped crying, Walker said.

Deputies think the baby was on the side of the highway for two days. The baby was taken to the hospital in surprisingly good health. He was discovered not far from where his dead brother, who is four years old, was discovered Monday.

“It was the weather that we got from Beryl on Sunday and Monday that saved the cute baby.” There were bands of rain coming in, and there were a lot of clouds over us. At this point in the year, it’s not rare for it to be 92 to 93 degrees in Louisiana with a heat index of 105 to 106. We are thankful for the weather we had because the one-year-old child lived for two days on the side of the road without food or water. Police chief Guillory told The Weather Channel, “We might have had two dead kids if it weren’t for the weather.”

The child was treated for injuries that were not too bad and was then taken into protective care. Walton said he has a connection with the child and hopes to hear from them over the years.
