Congress approved the Summer EBT Program in December, designed to extend meal assistance to children during school breaks. It operates under the U.S. Department of Agriculture as part of the broader Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Despite the deadline for application looming on January 1, Florida has not appointed an agency to oversee this initiative.
Child hunger advocates, including Sky Beard from No Kid Hungry, express deep concern over Florida’s hesitation. The cost to the state would be a 50 percent match for administrative expenses, amounting to approximately $12 million annually – a figure not accounted for in the state budget.
