Authorities are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a thief accused of taking a senior citizen’s debit card from a ShopRite in Howell and using the information in the wallet to withdraw $9,000 from a nearby bank, police said.

The crime occurred on July 27 when the man observed the victim enter his PIN while using a debit card at the store’s self-checkout line on Route 9, according to Howell police.

When the senior guy arrived at the parking lot, the fraudster struck up a conversation with him and eventually dropped a $20 bill on the ground, according to authorities.

While the victim was distracted, the robber snatched his debit card from his wallet without his knowledge, according to authorities. According to authorities, the scammer then went to a local Bank of America branch and used the debit card to withdraw cash four times.

The victim discovered his debit card was missing only a few days later when he checked his bank statement.
