Third Strike: Iconic Florida Restaurant Shutters Doors Amidst Inspection Woes!
CNS News– The Miami New Times wrote in 2015 that South Florida is definitely “not the south” when it comes to culture. The article said that South Florida is a mix of New York and the Caribbean cultures. You can see that many places in Florida do embrace southern home cooking if you drive around the state, even if you don’t agree with this attitude.
This is because many Florida restaurants serve and specialize in southern home cooking. One restaurant in this style had to close for the third time recently because it had to go through a state check, but it looks like it’s now back open.
About The Chicken Pantry:
It looks like this diner doesn’t have a website, but on Instagram, it says that it serves “Southern Home Cooking At Its Best Since 1956.” The restaurant’s Facebook page shows a simple retro spot that often posts about its deals. In the past, on New Year’s, it offered a cornbread waffle with mac and cheese and pork, black-eyed peas, and greens on top.
People in Bunnell rate The Chicken Pantry 4.1 out of 5 stars. Many people liked the food, but many complained about having to wait because the place gets busy at times. There are over 1,100 reviews of the place on Google.
A Reviewer Named Mark wrote:
“Just great. We’re always happy with what we order. My wife’s chicken and waffles this time were “fantastic,” which is what made me write this. Enough food for everyone. I don’t like the tiny 6oz coffee mugs, but they kept refilling them, so it wasn’t a big deal. The fried chicken has the best batter ever. Pantry, keep it up!”
What Happened During the Inspection?
The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation says that there was an exam on January 29, 2024. That day, 18 violations were found, with 12 being low-priority, 3 being medium-priority, and 3 being high-priority. People said they saw dead roaches, water sitting on the bottom of the reach-in cooler, and shrimp warming in water. These were all basic violations. People broke the rules in the middle level by doing things like using a sink for handwashing other things and not properly dating meatloaf in a cooler.
Some of the most serious violations were finding six live bugs under the dish pit and making sure the dish machine sanitizer was at the right strength. Because of some of the above violations, the restaurant had to close for a while to fix the problems. On January 30, 2024, there was another check.
But because live and dead bugs were still said to have been seen, the restaurant stayed closed for now. After another check on January 30, 2024, there were no violations found, so the restaurant could reopen. Since the store reopened, it has been reviewed. Jennifer was the one who said the restaurant “was empty.”

The closing in January 2024 was not the only one, which is a shame. In August 2022 and July 2023, there were also reports of short-term bans. It is important to remember that an inspection is just a snapshot of how a restaurant acts sometimes, not all the time.
