A group of 13 puppies were found on the side of the road on July 14. KAKE, a local ABC News station, says the find was made around 9:30 a.m. in Garden City, near 9th and Maple Streets.

The Garden City Police Department wrote on Facebook about the rescue so that the puppies could be reunited with their homes.

“PUPPY LOVE: Officers found this sweet litter of puppies near 9th and Maple Streets (THIRTEEN of them),” it said.

“They were our little “paw-tners,” and we gave them lots of love and attention before taking them to the animal shelter,” the police department wrote on social media. “Fingers crossed they are reunited with their family(s) soon!”

People was told by the Garden City Police Department that the dogs were “hot” when they were found because it was so hot in the area (AccuWeather says it dropped to 97 degrees).

“Other than being hot when we found them, they were sweet as can be and seem to be in good health,” the police department told PEOPLE in an email. The day of the rescue, “temperatures were expected to be in the low triple-digits.”

The Garden City Police Department is looking into whether the 13 dogs were left behind by someone.

“Officers made sure to give them extra love and care before giving them to the Finney County Humane Society for more care,” the group said in a statement. “The thirteen puppies weigh 6-8 pounds each.”
