Three People Are Killed When an Amtrak Train and a Pickup Truck Crash in Western New York
A pickup truck was slammed by an Amtrak train in western New York, north of Buffalo, on Saturday, according to fire officials. The accident resulted in the deaths of three people.
CNN received a phone call from the fire chief of North Tonawanda during which he stated that all of the occupants in the vehicle were pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident on Friday night.
The twenty-one passengers and crew members on the train were not reported to have sustained any injuries, according to Amtrak.
According to a statement released by Amtrak, the collision occurred on the track that was being traveled by Amtrak train 281, which was heading north from New York to Niagara Falls.
The North Tonawanda fire department arrived at the scene soon before 8 p.m. Eastern Time (ET), and first responders from adjacent towns arrived to assist the three passengers who were trapped inside the truck, as stated in a press release issued by the department.
There are more than two hundred deaths that take place at grade crossings every year, as stated by the Federal Railroad Administration. Railroad-highway grade crossing occurrences are the second-leading cause of rail-related mortality in the United States.
