On Saturday, during a news conference, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna announced that more than 153,000 residents had been ordered to evacuate their homes due to a deadly outbreak of wildfires in the Los Angeles region.

It has been advised that 166,000 additional residents should be ready to leave the area. The most devastating fire in Los Angeles history, the Palisades Fire, was one of three blazes that destroyed 38,000 acres of land and threatened at least 57,000 structures.

According to forecasters, gusty winds will continue to be a threat next week.

Encino resident and Target security guard Alana Alejo left her home on Friday. Alejo has lived in Los Angeles since 2007. She claimed that the sight of ash in the air prompted her to go before an evacuation order was issued. She escaped with her possessions, including a terrified pet hamster and a quantity of food she had stored for just such an occasion.

Outside the evacuation site at the Lanark Recreation Center, Alejo told USA TODAY, “I was panicking trying to be calm” on Friday night. “Watching this unfold is incredibly difficult. Some of my acquaintances have lost everything—their homes, in particular, have been leveled. This feels authentic.
