On Monday, Sept. 9, a wife and mother from New York City was shot in the face and killed while protecting her husband from thieves who were trying to rob him. Several news sources say the suspects are still on the run.

It was about 11 p.m. when police were called to a condo building on Market Street in Chinatown. According to the New York Police Department, when they got there, they found Ying Zhu Liu already dead.

Liu was 57 years old

Two guys followed her husband into his apartment building and then into the elevator as he went up to the eighth floor, he told the NYPD. Once he got off the lift, the men tried to rob him, but Liu heard the noise and ran into the hallway to stop them. The news source also said that she was shot in the head and died right away. Liu’s adult son saw the shot that killed the man.

ABC 7 says that the suspects, who have not been caught yet, got away with Liu’s husband’s phone. There is a security camera above Liu and her family’s room, but it’s not known if it caught what happened.

Police told NBC New York that the suspects left the scene on foot. Both of them had ski masks on. One of them was wearing a covered black and red jacket and white gym shoes. The second suspect wore black pants and a black jacket with a hood.

Pix 11 said that the people who are thought to have robbed Liu and her husband may not have known either of them.

In a talk with ABC 7, one neighbor said that there had been a theft in the area the night before.

“It’s very scary but I think it’s the same two people who robbed a guy at 10:30 Sunday night, they robbed another guy, I think two young kids, it’s terrible,” Ann said.

A neighbor named Emerson Coreis asked, “Where are the cops? I don’t see many of them around here. More cops, Eric Adams, do something about it.”
