Two Separate Crashes Block I-75 in Monroe County; Truck Driver Rescued After Steel Rods Trap Him in Cab
On Tuesday morning, two separate accidents stalled traffic on northbound I-75 in Monroe County. Although the investigation is ongoing, 7 News Detroit has found that the second crash may have been impacted by the first.
Around 7 a.m., a semi-truck driver contacted 911 in agony.
He informed the dispatcher, “I’m in a collision. I crashed my semi. “I crashed my semi!” It is unknown what caused the disaster, but officials claim the steel rods he was hauling perforated his cabin and drove his seat forward and up. He was fastened to the ceiling.
The motorist was only able to tell dispatchers he was on I-75, and it appears he hung up twice. Terry Jamieson, another semi-truck driver, told 7 News Detroit that he observed something wrong on the side of the road.
Jamieson stated, “As I drove by, I yelled out my window at him, ‘Hey man, are you OK?'”
“As I got closer, I could see that the steel bars that he’s hauling got shoved through which means he, at one point, had slammed on his brakes so hard that his load broke loose,” he informed me.
“I’ve personally dragged it. I spent two years lugging steel. That is a frightening situation knowing that people back there… nothing will stop them,” he stated.
Jamieson contacted 911 and assisted dispatchers in directing emergency workers to the crash site, which is located where I-75 breaks off from 275. The dispatcher questioned Jamieson, “He did answer you when you went by, uh, yelled in?”
He responded: “Yeah, I heard him yell something and I saw his arm move.” “Okay, we’ve got them on the way. “Thank you very much,” the dispatcher added.
Jamieson responded, “No problem.” “Thank you.”
Surprisingly, less than a half mile away, there had been an unrelated tragic motorbike crash, impeding traffic.
He claimed, “What I don’t get is that when she asked me where it was and I had no idea, many automobiles passed by and looked straight at it without saying anything. I immediately thought, ‘Ok, we need to call 911.'”
As emergency crews arrived at the scene, the injured motorist contacted 911 again and begged them to pray with him.
The dispatcher consoled him.
She said, “Don’t think about it. I understand how terrible it is, but I do not want you to move. I don’t want you to inflict yourself any more agony, okay?
According to the Frenchtown Township fire chief, firefighters utilized the jaws of life to free the motorist, who was transported to St. Joe Hospital with significant injuries. He’s expected to survive.
