2024 Child Tax Credits by State: Key Details and Eligibility Criteria

These states are set to distribute child tax credit checks to families in 2024. It’s important to note that not all bookings are fully refundable, so having an income may be necessary to receive the complete refund.

In Arizona: families are eligible to receive a non-refundable $100 credit for dependents under age 17. Residents in Arizona are eligible to receive an extra $25 for each dependent over the age of 17. 

In California: families with incomes below $25,000 qualify for a $1,000 payment. Individuals making between $25,000 and $30,000 would be eligible for a lower credit.

This credit is specifically for children under the age of 6 and requires the family to meet the qualifications for the California Earned Income Tax Credit.

In Colorado: families with incomes of $75,000 or less ($85,000 for married taxpayers filing jointly) may be eligible to receive up to $1,200 for each qualifying child. This credit is applicable only for children who are under 6 years old.

In Idaho: families are eligible to receive $205 for each qualifying child under 16 through the nonrefundable child tax credit.

In Maine: resident taxpayers can claim $300 for each qualifying child and dependent under the dependent exemption tax credit. Children and dependents who qualify are the same as those claimed for the federal child tax credit.

In Maryland: individuals earning $6,000 or less may be eligible for a $500 refundable tax credit for each qualifying child under 17 years old.

In Massachusetts: families can receive $180 for one dependent or $360 for multiple dependents. To be eligible, dependents need to be under 12 years old.

In Minnesota: families are eligible to receive $1,750 for each qualifying child. For single filers, the credit phases out for income exceeding $29,500, and for taxpayers filing jointly, it phases out for income over $35,000.

In New Jersey: families with an income of $30,000 or less can benefit from the Child Tax Credit Program, receiving a refundable $500 tax credit for each child under 6 years old. Families with incomes of $80,000 or less may be eligible for a $300 payment. 

In New Mexico: families may qualify for payments ranging from $25 to $600 per eligible child based on income until the 2031 tax year.

In New York: Families who qualify have the option to receive either 33% of the federal child tax credit and federal additional child tax credit for eligible children or $100 for each qualifying child.

The state has broadened its credit to cover children under 4 years old, which was previously limited to children 4 years old and older.

In Oklahoma, households earning less than $100,000 can receive 5% of the federal child tax credit (PDF).

In Oregon, families with an income below $30,000 can receive $1,000 for each child under the age of 5.

In Utah, households that qualify can receive $1,000 for each child aged 1 to 4 years. The amount will decrease by $10 for every $1 increase in income above a specific threshold.

In Vermont, households earning less than $125,000 can receive $1,000 per child under the age of 5.
