RICHMOND, Va. — Democrats and Republicans in Virginia are responding to Kamala Harris’s choice of Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota, as her running mate for vice president.
The head of the Democratic Party of Virginia, Susan Swecker, told Nexstar’s 8News, “Vice President Harris has chosen someone who will work for all of us.”
“As a thinking American, I have deep concerns about him being on this ticket,” said Rich Anderson, who is the head of the Republican Party of Virginia.
Swecker says Walz will be able to connect with people all over the country because he grew up in the Midwest and has served in the Army National Guard, in Congress, and as Governor of Minnesota.
Swecker said, “He’s the kind of guy you want to have over for dinner, have a beer, and just talk things over.”
Anderson, on the other hand, is worried about Walz and said that Walz is agreeing to what Anderson called the “dysfunction” caused by President Joe Biden by running with Harris.
“Extremely weak on the border, which has been porous in ways that have never been seen before, and then there are big problems in Minnesota,” Anderson said.
For Anderson, another worry is how Walz handled the protests that followed the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer in 2020.
“He decided not to send out the National Guard for the whole ten days,” Anderson told 8News. “Whole areas in the Twin Cities were burned to the ground by rioters.”
Swecker, on the other hand, says Walz is right about the things that Americans care about the most.
“Voters need to know that he did set laws about abortions in Minnesota. I think he was the first governor and the first state to do that,” Swecker said.
