Virginia Tragedy: Firefighter Killed, Others Injured in Explosion Linked to 500-Gallon Propane Tank

Authorities stated on Saturday that a 500-gallon subterranean propane tank was discovered at a residence in Virginia, where an explosion occurred on Friday, resulting in the tragic death of one firefighter and injuries to several others.

Chief Keith Johnson, speaking at a news briefing, reported that Loudoun County Fire and Rescue responded to the incident in Sterling at approximately 7:40 pm following reports of a gas leak.

According to Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief of Operations James Williams, propane leakage from the tank had permeated into nearby residences.

Firefighters were present inside the dwelling when the explosion occurred.

Initially, authorities reported that nine firefighters sustained injuries of varying severity.

However, Loudoun County Fire announced on Saturday that the total count of injured individuals had risen to at least 10, which included two occupants of the residence with minor injuries.

According to officials, firefighters evacuated the occupants and their pets from the residence. Presently, four first responders remain hospitalized.

Tribute to Fallen Firefighter Trevor Brown

The firefighter who tragically lost his life was identified as Trevor Brown, aged 45, affiliated with the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company.

Loudoun County Fire and Rescue conveyed a message via X, requesting that Trevor Brown’s family, friends, and colleagues be kept in thoughts and prayers during this challenging period, emphasizing the importance of respecting the family’s privacy.

Chief Johnson indicated that the precise cause of the explosion has yet to be determined.

While propane is suspected to be involved, a conclusive determination has not been reached.

The investigation into the fire is being conducted by the Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office, with support from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Utility provider Washington Gas was on-site to aid in the inquiry.

Sterling, situated in Loudoun County, with a population of approximately 30,000 residents, is located to the west of Washington, D.C.
