Derek Chauvin, who was found guilty of killing George Floyd, was said to have been stabbed in jail.
News stories citing anonymous sources say they think an inmate stabbed the former police officer. The Associated Press (AP) news agency says that an anonymous source says Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who was found guilty of killing George Floyd, was badly hurt when another inmate stabbed him at a federal prison in Arizona.

The attack is said to have happened on Friday at the Federal Correctional Institution, Tucson. This is a medium-security jail that has had problems with security and staffing. AP said the person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the attack in public.

The New York Times also wrote about the event, naming two people who knew what was going on. It was reported by AP that someone was beaten up at FCI Tucson on Friday around 12:30 p.m. local time. The Bureau of Prisons acknowledged this.

The agency said in a statement that the incident was contained and “life-saving measures” were taken before the inmate, who the agency did not name, was taken to a hospital for more care and testing. The Bureau of Prisons said that no workers were hurt and that the FBI was told about what happened.

Visiting at the prison, which has about 380 prisoners, has been stopped. People who work for Chauvin and the FBI were asked to respond. This is the second well-known attack on a federal prisoner in the last five months. Larry Nassar, an infamous sports doctor, was stabbed by a fellow prisoner at a federal prison in Florida in July.

It’s also the second big event at the federal jail in Tucson in just over a year. One of the prisoners at the low-security jail camp pulled out a gun and tried to shoot a visitor in the head in November 2022. The prisoner shouldn’t have had the gun, but it went off by accident and no one was hurt.

The 47-year-old Chauvin was sent to FCI Tucson from a high-security Minnesota state jail in August 2022 to serve a federal sentence of 21 years for violating Floyd’s civil rights and a state sentence of 22½ years for second-degree murder.

Because Eric Nelson, Chauvin’s lawyer, thought he would be a target, he pushed to keep him away from other inmates and out of the general community. In Minnesota, Nelson wrote in court papers last year that Chauvin was mostly locked up alone “largely for his own protection.”

The US Supreme Court turned down Chauvin’s appeal against his murder sentence last week. To add to this, Chauvin is trying to get his federal guilty plea thrown out because he says new proof shows he didn’t kill Floyd.

Chauvin, who is white, put his knee on Floyd’s neck for 9½ minutes on May 25, 2020, while they were standing outside of a convenience store. Floyd was black and was thought to be trying to pass a fake $20 bill. “I can’t breathe” cries from Floyd were caught on tape by a bystander.

His death led to protests around the world, some of which turned deadly, and made the country face problems like racism and police brutality. For their part in Floyd’s death, three other former cops who were at the scene got lighter state and federal sentences.
