CNS News–In an inspiring effort to integrate immigrant asylum seekers into the workforce, New York City has launched a pioneering pilot program through Careers through Culinary Arts Programs (C-CAP). This initiative is designed to equip these new arrivals with essential skills for entry-level positions in the culinary sector, including cooking and baking roles in restaurants and hotels.
The program reflects a broader societal acknowledgment of the potential contributions that asylum seekers can make to their new communities, especially in industries like hospitality that often face labor shortages. The initial cohort of this program consists of 10 trainees, setting a precedent for inclusivity and opportunity.
An additional 40 participants are anticipated to join the ranks in this five-week intensive training course during its pilot phase, underscoring the program’s ambitious scope and the high demand for such vocational training among asylum seekers.
The curriculum is tailored to the unique needs of these individuals, with instruction primarily conducted in Spanish to ensure accessibility for a diverse group of enrollees. A significant milestone for participants is the attainment of the New York City Food Handler certificate upon completion of the program.
