Atlanta’s Dog Owners on High Alert as Mysterious Illness Sparks Concern!

Some dogs can’t get better from the illness. It starts with a cough and can get worse due to asthma.
Sandra Macedo and Ryder, her long-haired Dalmatian, love writing about the fun things they do in metro Atlanta. People who watch them on TikTok (@RyderTheDal) have seen videos of them going to Home Depot, dog parks, and other places.

Macedo said, “We go on a lot of trips.” “Anything dog-friendly in Atlanta we’re trying to find and share with more people.” These trips are looking a little different right now. Veterinarians all over the country are warning that dogs are getting a mysterious sickness. Today says the illness starts with a cough that can last for weeks.

It might not get better with standard treatment, like antibiotics, so the dog could end up with serious pneumonia and trouble breathing. “He’s healthy and young, but you never know.”  “You don’t know how it will make you feel,” Macedo said.

“Even though he’s up to date on vaccines, if anything were to happen to him, that’s a big expense.” In Macedo’s most recent TikTok, she tells Ryder why they shouldn’t be around other dogs right now. “We do some nature walks and do some neighborhood walks, but we are avoiding some contact with dogs,” she stated.

“We’re not doing groomers right now… so he’s going to be a little scruffy, but that’s okay as long as he’s safe and healthy.” VCA Animal Hospitals treats more than four million pets every year, and they said that different clinics have seen more cases of canine respiratory sickness in some states.

“As with any contagious illness, we advise all dog owners to work with their vet to make sure their pets are up-to-date on respiratory disease vaccines and to keep their dogs from coming into contact with other dogs if there is a known outbreak in your area,” said Silene St. Bernard, regional medical director for VCA Animal Hospitals.

“If a dog is exhibiting symptoms such as excessive coughing, labored breathing, significant lethargy, or loss of appetite, call your veterinarian immediately.” VCA Animal Hospitals says that to lower your pet’s risk, you should do many of the same things that Macedo and Ryder say. Some of those are:

  • Keeping vaccinations up to date
  • Limiting time around other dogs
  • Reducing time at doggy daycare and boarding facilities
  • Considering in-home pet sitters
  • Avoiding dog parks, communal water bowls, and other public areas
