The Florida Department of Health is conducting an epidemiological inquiry into the numerous instances of measles at an elementary school in Broward County over the weekend.

DOH-Broward revealed on Sunday its initiation of an investigation into these cases following the identification of four reported instances at Manatee Bay Elementary School in Weston over the weekend.

As communicated in its press release, DOH-Broward has apprised local healthcare providers, emphasizing that individuals who have completed the full regimen of the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccination are afforded 98% protection and have minimal likelihood of contracting the illness.

According to DOH-Broward, measles is highly contagious, persisting in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours, with a susceptibility rate exceeding 90% among vulnerable contacts, including those with compromised immunity or incomplete MMR vaccination status.

“DOH-Broward is currently identifying susceptible contacts potentially eligible for post-exposure prophylaxis using MMR vaccine or immunoglobulin,” the agency reported.

DOH-Broward indicated that symptoms typically manifest within eight to 14 days post-exposure, though the incubation period can extend up to 21 days.

Measles transmission is feasible four days before the onset of visible rash and four days thereafter.

Furthermore, in certain instances, measles can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis.

Symptoms of Measles

The principal symptom of measles is the characteristic rash that appears on the face and neck before spreading to other parts of the body. Nevertheless, DOH-Broward underscored additional symptoms, including:

  • High fever
  • Persistent cough
  • Runny nose
  • Conjunctivitis

“If any symptoms are suspected or observed, individuals are advised to contact their healthcare provider for guidance on seeking medical attention while minimizing exposure to others,” DOH-Broward emphasized.

The agency also cautioned against unannounced visits to DOH-Broward or healthcare providers without prior contact.
