Dickens on the Strand takes Galveston back in time.

A holiday celebration with a Victorian theme called Dickens on the Strand has been going on in Galveston for 50 years and is a time-honored custom.

In honour of Charles Dickens and the time period that Galveston represents, the streets of Galveston take you back in time to Victorian London.

Will Wright, chief creative officer of the Galveston Historical Foundation, said, “It’s the best part of our year.”

“The architecture down here is very much the time that he was writing about and writing during,” Wright said when asked what the link was to Dickens’ reading.

To mark the 50th occasion, nine Dickens descendants will be in town all weekend.

It’s the Galveston Historical Foundation’s biggest event to raise money.

“It’s one of Galveston’s great events.” Wright says, “It has something to do with the community and Galveston’s history.”

You can get the look of the 1800s with help from sellers like Luna Chenault’s Caveat Emptor.

“I love it because it’s different.” She said, “There are trims on trims.” “And you can wear any colour you like.”

Many scenes and parades show that it is Christmas in Dickens’ famous story “A Christmas Carol.”
