In less than a month, Wisconsin has seen its fifth case of bird flu.


On Friday, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection reported the identification of a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza, often known as bird flu. This is the fifth case of bird flu diagnosed in the state since November 17.

The most recent instance was detected in a commercial flock located in Barron County. Three instances were detected in commercial flocks in Trempealeau County over the previous week. In November, a case was detected in a non-commercial flock located in Taylor County.

Poultry items originating from the impacted flocks will be prohibited from being transported, and the birds on the affected properties will be culled in order to prevent the dissemination of the virus. DATCP strongly advised all poultry proprietors to enforce biosecurity protocols such as regulating access to animals and farms, donning protective equipment, and administering vaccinations to birds as a means to halt the transmission.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) is extremely infectious and has the potential to cause fatalities. The transmission of the virus occurs through direct contact with infected avian species and by close proximity to wild birds or their excrement. Additionally, the virus can be transmitted via equipment or clothing worn by individuals who are in contact with the avian species.

Due to a significant increase in bird flu cases throughout the entire state, more than 2 million birds were euthanized, resulting in the temporary closure of the aviary at the Henry Vilas Zoo.

HPAI does not pose any immediate public health risks for humans. To effectively eliminate the virus, it is crucial to handle and cook chicken or eggs thoroughly until they reach an internal temperature of 165F.
