CNS News–In a recent announcement, Walmart has confirmed the closure of two of its stores located in Southern California, specifically in the cities of San Diego and El Cajon. The decision to cease operations by February 9th, 2024, has been attributed to a combination of factors including underwhelming performance and challenges in renewing reasonable lease agreements with the property managers of the affected locations.
The San Diego Walmart Neighborhood Market at 2121 Imperial Ave and the El Cajon Walmart at 605 Fletcher Parkway are the stores slated for closure. This move is set to impact 357 employees who, according to Walmart’s spokesperson, will be presented with the opportunity to transfer to other Walmart locations, thereby mitigating the immediate employment concerns arising from the closures.
Post-closure, the Walmart presence in the region will be reduced to five stores in San Diego and two in El Cajon. This development follows a trend from the previous year when Walmart closed over 20 stores nationwide, citing theft and poor performance as primary reasons.

The closures in Southern California mark the commencement of what could potentially be a series of similar actions across the state in 2024, although no further closures have been announced or planned publicly at this juncture. Walmart has also been recognized for its initiative to accommodate customers with sensory sensitivities by offering sensory-friendly hours at many of its locations.
These hours include measures such as turning off in-store televisions, lowering radio volumes, and dimming lights to create a more comfortable shopping environment for individuals with sensory issues, although these hours are open to all customers.
