Governor Abbott’s Operation Lone Star Claims to Have Arrested Thousands of People and Cost $10 Billion!
CNS News–In March 2021, Texas Governor Greg Abbott initiated a significant border security operation known as Operation Lone Star. Nearly two years into its activation, the operation remains a cornerstone of Texas’ approach to handling the influx of migrants crossing the border.
As of the latest reports, Operation Lone Star has led to the detention of approximately 496,000 migrants for illegal entry into the United States. Among these, about 38,500 individuals face criminal charges, primarily for the misdemeanor crime of criminal trespassing.
The operation, which has cost the state an estimated $10 billion, reflects Governor Abbott’s stance on border security and his criticism of the federal government’s handling of the issue. Abbott contends that President Joe Biden’s administration has failed to adequately secure the border, prompting the need for state-level intervention.
Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers, under the umbrella of Operation Lone Star, have been deployed in strategic locations along the border, particularly in areas like Eagle Pass. These officers are tasked with enforcing state laws, including arresting individuals for trespassing. The operation also involves significant physical barriers, including extra troopers, razor wire, and other deterrents.
One of the notable achievements of Operation Lone Star, as highlighted by the DPS, is the seizure of 453 million doses of fentanyl, a lethal drug that poses a significant public health risk. This aspect of the operation underscores Texas’ commitment to curbing not only illegal immigration but also the trafficking of dangerous narcotics.
Despite its apparent successes, Operation Lone Star has faced criticism. Critics argue that the substantial funds allocated to the operation could be better utilized in other critical areas, such as improving Texas’ educational system, healthcare facilities, and infrastructure. America Garcia of the Eagle Pass Border Coalition has voiced concerns that the operation is more politically motivated than focused on the genuine welfare of Texans.
Furthermore, the operation’s long-term effectiveness and impact on migrant communities remain contentious issues. Some view it as an essential measure to protect Texas’ borders and communities, while others see it as an excessive and politically charged response to a complex issue.

Governor Abbott’s decision to bus migrants to Democrat-led sanctuary cities has also drawn attention. This move has led to the transportation of over 100,000 people to various cities outside Texas, including New York, which received the highest number of migrants.
