CNS News–The Florida Turnpike has a speed restriction of 70 miles per hour, but two people were arrested on Sunday morning for what police said was street racing at 199 miles per hour. After receiving allegations from locals of numerous automobiles engaging in street racing and takeovers in the Lake Mary Jane region, deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department arrested Luis Alejandro Lozano-Figueroa, 20, and Mario Alberto Paz-Gil, 19, the next day.
A pair of black vehicles and a red Chevrolet Camaro were seen racing alongside each other, as stated in the arrest affidavit. The police recorded the Camaro’s speed at 199 mph as it continued into the southbound Turnpike.
The driver, Lozano-Figueroa, is facing accusations related to highway racing, while Paz-Gil is facing charges related to his role as a passenger in street racing. The two were sent to the Osceola County Prison. Additionally, a passenger in the car who was 16 years old was taken into custody and subsequently returned to their mother.
Tweets from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office indicate that 157 people were arrested, 1,290 were cited for unlawful street racing, and 54 vehicles were seized in 2023. “We have conducted operations before, and this one will not be the last,” the sheriff’s office said.

“In Orange County, there is no room for street racing.” Street takeovers, stunt driving, racing on public roads, and other similar activities are all unlawful in Florida. Unauthorized drifting, drag racing, wheelies, burnouts, and donuts are all prohibited by the legislation.
From 2018 to 2023, about 9,000 penalties were given for street racing and stunt driving throughout the state of Florida, according to the website of the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The website also notes that the bulk of these citations were handed out to younger drivers.
