CNS NewsIn a notable political development, Democrat Tom Keen has emerged victorious in the special election for Florida’s House District 35, signaling a significant win for the Democratic Party in a traditionally competitive area. This election was necessitated by the vacancy left by Republican Fred Hawkins, who accepted a position as president of South Florida State College.

Keen, a former Navy flight officer and businessman, focused his campaign on issues like affordable housing, free speech, reproductive rights, and environmental concerns. His victory was propelled by widespread support from state and national Democratic entities, reflecting an unprecedented level of enthusiasm and investment in the race.

FDP Chair Nikki Fried acknowledged the collective effort, stating that Florida Democrats have shown that they can still secure victories in swing seats with a well-organized and well-funded campaign. District 35, covering a significant part of Osceola County and extending to East Orange County, saw a primary in November to determine the candidates for this special election.

Keen’s opponent, Erika Booth, a former teacher and Osceola County school board member, had the backing of the Republican Party of Florida and campaigned on education, immigration, and election integrity.
