A month-old infant in Kansas City lost her life tragically on Friday, February 9th, after her mother, Mariah Thomas, mistakenly placed her inside an oven instead of her crib for a nap.

According to reports by the Associated Press, the accused mother, Mariah Thomas, now faces charges of endangering the welfare of a child in the first degree, resulting in the death of a child, a Class A felony.

The tragedy unfolded on Friday afternoon when authorities responded to a distressing call reporting an unresponsive infant at a residence near 41st Street and Forest Avenue. 

Tragically, despite the efforts of first responders, the infant was pronounced dead upon their arrival.

Upon closer examination, authorities observed burns on the child, prompting further investigation into the circumstances of her untimely demise. 

Mariah Thomas, under questioning, revealed the harrowing mistake, stating that she had inadvertently placed her daughter in the oven instead of her crib while attempting to put her down for a nap.

The details surrounding this inexplicable error remain unclear, leaving the community grappling with shock and disbelief. At present, it remains uncertain whether Thomas has legal representation as the investigation progresses.

In light of this heartbreaking tragedy, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office has assumed responsibility for the investigation, exploring all possible angles, including the potential for criminal intent on the part of Mariah Thomas.

In a statement issued by Jackson County prosecuting attorney Jean Peters Baker, the profound sorrow and gravity of the situation were palpable. 

“We acknowledge the gruesome nature of this tragedy and our hearts are weighted by the loss of this precious life,” Baker expressed the commitment to seeking justice in the wake of such a devastating loss.
