Lauren Curry, a longtime government and political aide, has been named Gov. Brian Kemp’s chief of staff. She is the first woman in Georgia’s 235-year history to fill that position.

Trey Kilpatrick has taken a job as senior vice president of external affairs at Georgia Power, so she takes over his job.

It’s possible that the chief of staff is the most important person a governor will hire. The National Governors Association says that person is in charge of managing the governor’s time, administration, team, policy plan, message, and anything else that comes up.

Curry has worked for the Georgia government in a number of different roles since 2002.

She was Kemp’s chief operating officer and director of governmental affairs and strategy before becoming deputy chief of staff.

She worked as chief of staff for the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency, director of public and governmental affairs at the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, special projects director at the Georgia Department of Economic Development, and press assistant to former Gov. Sonny Perdue before she joined the Governor’s Office.

At Wofford College, Curry got his bachelor’s degree in government and business economics. At the University of Georgia, he got his master’s degree in public administration.

Kemp’s top staff team had a lot of changes announced by the Governor’s Office on Tuesday. Curry was one of them. Curry’s job as deputy chief of staff will be taken over by Brad Bohannon, who is currently the director of government affairs and policy.
