Mother in Florida Recounts the Hit-and-Run Incident Where Her Daughter Was Hit by a Vehicle!
CNS News–In a harrowing courtroom testimony, Marilu Gonzalez, the mother of a 10-year-old girl, Yaceny Rodriguez-Gonzalez, who lost her life in a tragic hit-and-run incident at a Fort Pierce bus stop, recounted the heart-wrenching details of the fateful morning.
The incident, which occurred on September 23, 2021, has brought the alleged perpetrator, Arianna Colon, to trial, accused of striking and killing young Gonzalez-Rodriguez and then fleeing the scene. Marilu Gonzalez took the stand on a Wednesday afternoon, fighting back tears as she revisited the traumatic events that unfolded on Orleander Avenue.
She and her daughter were at the bus stop, anticipating a routine school day when tragedy struck. Gonzalez recalled the bus approaching, activating its flashing lights as a signal for students to prepare to board. Yaceny Rodriguez-Gonzalez, in accordance with the safety measures, waited for the flashing lights before disembarking from the car.
As the bus approached with its warning lights, Marilu Gonzalez turned around to witness an unexpected horror – a bright light hurtling towards them at an alarming speed. The mother described the moment of impact with a loud noise that shattered the morning calm. In her testimony, Gonzalez vividly recounted her immediate reaction, stating, “The next thing I saw was my daughter rolling around on the ground.”

The prosecutor, handling the case, asserted that Arianna Colon is responsible for the fatal collision and subsequent hit-and-run. Leaving the scene of the accident, Colon faces serious legal consequences for her alleged actions. The defense, however, argued that Colon never saw the child crossing the road, emphasizing the lack of streetlights on Orleander Avenue, which they claim made it a particularly dark and challenging environment.
According to the defense attorney, the absence of streetlights on Orleander Avenue played a pivotal role in the tragic incident. They contended that the lack of proper illumination contributed to Colon’s inability to see the child crossing the road. This raises questions about the safety measures in place at the bus stop and the overall visibility conditions on the road.
As the trial unfolds, crucial questions emerge about the adequacy of safety measures at bus stops and the accountability of drivers in ensuring the safety of pedestrians, especially children. The flashing lights on school buses are designed to alert drivers and pedestrians of an imminent stop, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in such situations.
