New Jersey Lottery Wants to Sell Tickets Online, But Some People Don’t Want that To Happen!

CheapNailsalonsnearmeNew Jersey’s lottery system is on the brink of a digital transformation with plans to start online ticket sales in 2024. This move aims to attract a new generation of players and simplify the purchase process for the state’s residents. However, this proposal is facing significant opposition.

The Assembly State and Local Government Committee recently passed a bill that could derail these plans. If enacted, the legislation would prevent the New Jersey Lottery from selling tickets directly online.

This wouldn’t affect existing courier services like Jackpocket, which purchases tickets from retailers on behalf of players. The opposition stems primarily from convenience store operators, who see the state’s direct online sales as direct competition.

Eric Blomgren of the New Jersey Gasoline, Convenience Store, Automotive Association highlighted that lottery sales are a vital attraction for these stores, often leading to additional purchases with higher profit margins.

The New Jersey Food Council also expressed concerns about the negative impact on its members if the lottery’s online sales proposal goes through. Despite these concerns, the New Jersey Lottery’s online proposal, which only covers draw games like Mega Millions and Jersey Cash 5, is set to start in the fall of 2024, leaving scratch-offs as an exclusive in-store offering.
