On Monday, Texans Were Urged to Conserve Energy Due to Projected Demand Straining the Electric Grid!
CNS News– In an unprecedented move reflecting the severity of the impending cold weather, the Texas power grid operator has issued a critical call for power conservation. As a blast of arctic air plunges much of Texas into subfreezing temperatures, residents are being urged to conserve energy on Monday morning, a time when demand is expected to soar to record-breaking levels.
This conservation appeal, spanning from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday coincides with forecasts of wind chills plummeting below 0 degrees across parts of the state. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) warns that the confluence of extreme cold and unseasonably low wind conditions is hampering the electricity generation capabilities, particularly from windmills.
During these critical hours, Texans are encouraged to limit their use of large appliances and turn off unnecessary lights, mitigating the risk of overburdening the grid. The Public Utility Commission of Texas has reiterated this call, emphasizing ERCOT’s strategic measures, including tapping into reserve power, urging large electric customers to reduce energy consumption voluntarily, and accelerating the activation of additional generation units.
Governor Greg Abbott has alerted residents to brace for a prolonged period of frigid conditions, emphasizing the preparedness of the state’s power infrastructure. This cautionary stance and call for conservation stem from the devastating impact of Winter Storm Uri in 2021, which led to widespread power failures and significant loss of life.

As the cold front moves across Texas, areas like Central and North Texas anticipate a mix of freezing rain and sleet, with wind chills potentially dropping to -12 degrees.
In response, ERCOT has issued a “weather watch,” highlighting the critical need for balanced supply and demand to prevent grid damage. ERCOT’s proactive measures come amidst heightened political scrutiny following the 2021 grid failure. Efforts to strengthen the grid include legislative mandates for improved winterization and initiatives to bolster gas-fueled power generation.
